GRAND FINAL – 9TH APRIL, 2019

Tuesday Night Grand Final Report 9th April …

Tuesday Night Pennant team played in the Grand Final this week against St Kilda and we came away with a 16 shot win.  The night was chilly and wet and playing on grass made it harder to get our length than the quick green at Chelsea. We all made our way to Murrumbeena Park where Div 3 and Div 4 were playing in the Grand Final. Our hosts welcomed us to the club and gave us all the run down on the club and presentation afterwards.  Greg had prepared the cards, the coin was tossed, the rinks allocated and agreed to have a 2 end roll up instead of the normal 1 end. We lost the toss and we only had 3 supporters compared to St Kilda’s 15 but the title was won by Edithvale. On rink no. 5 with Greg, Kaye, Pauline and Ann, they powered ahead winning 6 of the first 8 ends with 3 multiples and a 8 shot lead.  On the 11th end the opposition  got a 4 and reduced the lead to 2 shots but winning the 12th, 13th, 14th end with two 2’s and a 1 it gave us a 7 point lead with 3 ends to play.  St Kilda won the 15th and 16th with a one and a three, but our gallant players got a one on the last end and not only won by 4 shots but finished first out of the 3 rinks. Rink number 6 had Bobby, Shellie, Sally and Craig and their start was very even with the opposition.  On the 7th end we dropped a 4 and were down by 5 shots. The 8th end, St Kilda’s lead rolled a short end which allowed Edithvale the mat and to roll a longer end
which did the trick to let Edithvale win the next 5 ends with all multiples (three 2’s, one 3 and one 4). By the 12th we had an 8 shot lead and in the last 5 ends played, Edithvale won another 3 ends to St Kilda’s 2 ends.  This rink won by 11 shots and finished next. Rink number 7 had Alan (suffering with a bad cold), Diane, Glenys and Rod and this was a much tighter game. St Kilda were playing long ends and at the 4th end scores were level. St Kilda then went on a spree winning the next 6 ends with all singles and one 2. The two Edithvale ladies were getting disheartened with their game not being able to make the distance, but our skip spurred us on to not give up and with words of encouragement from our lead we started playing our game and not theirs.  At the 9th end we were down by 6 shots and then won 5 out of the last 8 ends with 4 of them multiples. We took the lead on the 15th end with 3 shots up, but lost the 16th by one and the 17th by one, which gave us a win of one shot ( not bad considering we only won 7 of the 17 ends) Thanks to our supporters who came along to watch, Jim, Rod H and Blake and thanks to the many well wishes.  As this is my last report for the season I would like to thank Julie for posting our team selection and reports on the website each week, to team manager Greg Bourne for his tireless work sending in results, settings up rinks at Chelsea and being side captain. Thanks to our emergency players who filled in when necessary and to our wonderful Team Players who gave their best each and every week.  See you all next
season. Diane Cameron Captain/Editor
