WINTER BOWLS TOURNAMENT – Sat 24th August 2024

Round 4 of Tournament No.3

Today we played the last game of the tournament and the weather was brilliant.  Glorious sunshine and mild breezes.  Majority of us were playing in short sleeve shirts.

Players all assembled just before 10am and score cards were given out for the first game of the day.  As always it took a couple of ends to get our line and length, but then we saw some great bowls played today.  First game done and dusted we ventured inside for morning tea.  Thanks to Marg Rook and Graeme for the cupcakes and sandwiches…delish!!

Cards were handed out to our players for their second game of the day and back outside where the weather stayed warm, but the breeze had picked up.  There were some close games with players vying for a win for the day or a win overall in the tournament.  With all games finished our players ate some homemade sausage rolls (thank you Diane) while Frank and Diane collated the scores.

The runner-up today with 25 shots was Jan Collins and winner with 27 shots was Cheryl Plunkett.  Many thanks to our substitutes for today, Rod Cameron and Kingsley Ellis.

Thanks to those that donated Raffle prizes today – Colins Shiel (Vegies and Herbs), Jennifer Ellis for plants, Phil Cameron for plants and our main sponsor Port Phillip Horticulture for raffle prizes and tournament prizemoney.

Winter Tournament No 3 – Round 3

Another nervous week of whether we would play or not, with the weather forecast predicting showers Friday and Saturday.  How much rain was going to fall and what time of day, was a BIG MYSTERY.  Woke up early Saturday morning and looked out the window to see a dark grey sky, jumped onto the weather site to check the rain radar.  Rain was forecast late in the morning so a text message was sent to all players asking them to arrive a little earlier so we could get the day underway.  Fear not, the weather fined up after we started, and the sun even came out to play.

Both games today were played on ‘B’ green and with the green a little damp from the morning shower, some took 3-4 ends to adjust their line and length.  The first game had some mixed results with some big scores which came with big smiles.  Inside for a quick cuppa and morning tea and some reflection of the first game….. Where did I go wrong?

Cards were handed out to our players for their second game of the day.  Some slightly big scores again on a couple of rinks and some great bowling.  The second game was all over by 12.30pm and players helped pack up, while Frank and Diane collated the scores.

The runner-up today with 28 shots was Jim Kavanagh (sub for Mary Weston) and winner with 34 shots was Heather Redpath.  Many thanks to our substitutes for today, Jim Kavanagh, Shellie Kavanagh and Garry Dodge also thankyou to Sally and Cheryl for supplying morning tea.

WINTER BOWLS TOURNAMENT – Sat 10th August 2024

Week 2 of Tournament No.3

What a brilliant day to play bowls with a slight breeze and some glorious sunshine – good to get out on the green.  First week throughout all three tournaments that we did not need a substitute player for the day.  Yahoo!!

Both games today were played on ‘B’ green and we even had some spectators come along to watch.  The first game of the day had some remarkably close scores as some of our players took 2-3 ends to get a feel for the green.  Inside for a quick cuppa and yes there was some delicious madeira cake to have with our cuppa today.

Cards were handed out to our players for their second game of the day.  Some slightly big scores on a couple of rinks and once again some close games.  The second game was all over by 1pm and players helped pack up, while Frank and Diane collated the scores.

Joint runner-up today with 27 shots was Frank Ryan and Heather Redpath and winner with a massive 41 shots was Claire Baskett.  I do believe that is a Club record for the Winter Bowls Tournament.  Well done to all players.

WINTER BOWLS TOURNAMENT No. 3 – Week 1 – Sat 3rd Aug 2024

Finally, we today got to start our third Winter Tournament, after a postponement due to rain last week.  I once again scoured weather reports during the week on the TV and on the local website and they all agreed there would be no rain and no frost warning.  HOORAY!!

Came down to the Club just before 9am and after checking both greens, the coordinators agreed to play today on ‘A’ green.  Everything was all set up and ready for our players to arrive and to start today’s game.  Cards were handed out and all players started their first game promptly at 10am.

Bowlers were surprised how mild the weather was and adjusted to the green well.  Scores across all rinks were fairly even and there were some great shots played.  The first game finished just after 11am and we went inside for a quick cuppa and some morning tea.  By 11.30am our players were ready for the second game.

The day finished just before 1pm and with the scores collated by Frank and Diane, prizemoney was handed out.  Today’s winners were:

Joint runner-up with 22 shots was Marika Forras and Bernie Turnbull.  Winner with 24 shots was Pamela Bryant

Well done to all players and many thanks to our substitute players, Jim Kavanagh and Brendan Doyle.  Also, thanks to all for helping to pack up at the end of the day.  See you all next week.

WINTER BOWLS TOURNAMENT No. 2 – Sat 13th July 2024

Round 4 of Tournament No.2 was played today and the day started with cloudy skies and chilly winds.  Before our players started to arrive, there was a late withdrawal, so began a stream of calls and texts for a last minute substitute.  With no one available, the draw was quickly amended and instead of 24 players, we had 20 players out on the green today.  Many thanks to all for your understanding in a quick change of teams and rinks.

Without fail, Bernie just managed to arrive one minute before 10am, and join our players out on the green.  The first game of the day saw some huge scores and also some quick finishes, (I’m sure they were keen to get inside for morning tea).  Todays morning tea was Boston bun and fruit cake…..YUMMO!

Score cards were handed out for the second game and our players ventured outside into the brilliant sunshine.  Once again the weather gods were on our side.  Saw some great shots being played today and there were some big scores and also a couple of drawn games today, which affected the overall scores for the day.

Runner-up today with 32 shots was Kingsley Ellis and winner with 33 shots was John Bryant.  A huge thanks to our substitutes for the day, John Bryant, Ray Weston, Roger Williams and Mike Gage.  Also thanks to John Lyons and Jan Collins for agreeing to sit this week out and to Vonnie Ryan and Diane Cameron for sharing a game.

Thanks to Colin Shiel for donating a huge box of vegies and herbs for the raffle and to Port Phillip Horticulture (Michael Cameron) for sponsoring the tournament.  While the players sat down to eat some home-made sausage rolls, prizemoney and raffle prizes were handed out.

1st Kingsley Ellis – 99 points, 2nd Claire Baskett – 84 points, 3rd Cheryl Plunkett – 83 points, 4th Bernie Turnbull – 81 points, 5th Heather Redpath – 79 points.

Week 2 – Another great morning to start our second week of the Winter Tournament, although it was still a little crisp outside.  Gradually our players started to arrive all rugged up and ready for a game of bowls.  No second guesses who was the last to arrive.

The first game of the day, saw many of the players bowling rather heavy and it took some around 2-3 ends to adjust their weight, and start rolling in onto the jack.  The weather starting fining up with some bowling in short sleeves (Me I just took off my scarf….it wasn’t that warm).  We all finished our first game by around 11.15 and ventured inside for a hot drink and some delicious morning tea (Banana muffins and chocolate brownies).

Score cards were handed out for the second game and back outside we went.  During our second game, the sun started to disappear behind some dark grey clouds, and we thought it might start to rain.  Luckily it held off and we finished the second game of the day.

Back inside with all cards handed in, Diane and Frank added up the scores and worked out today’s winners.

Runner-up with 27 shots – Bernie Turnbull              Winner with 30 shots – Heather Redpath

Thank you again to our substitutes for today – Jan Collins, John Lyons, Jim Kavanagh

Many thanks to all that helped pack up at the end of the day, it’s always appreciated.

Week 1 – Well, what a magnificent day we had bowling at Edithvale BC.  The sun was shining, and the southerly breeze was very minimal.  There was still a chill in the air, but the weather gods were on our side today. (Mind you I don’t think the bowling gods were on some of our players side today) The second tournament has 24 players registered, which is great to have.  With all players assembled just before 10am, score cards were handed out.

The first game had some big scores, with some players adjusting to the moist green and a moderate breeze.  It was so pleasant playing in the sunshine, although the shade from the trees behind the club made it a bit challenging.  No sooner had we started, we were back inside for a quick cuppa and some yummy morning tea (muesli slice and chocolate spiders).

Score cards were handed out for the second game and back outside we went.  The second game saw some great bowling by some players. We had 3 rinks resulted in a draw and some much closer scores.

Back inside with all cards handed in, Diane and Frank added up the scores and worked out today’s winners.

Runner-up 26 shots – Jennifer Ellis                    Winner with 35 shots – Kingsley Ellis

Thanks to our substitutes for today – Jan Collins, John Lyons, Jim Kavanagh

Many thanks to all that helped pack up at the end of the day, it’s always appreciated.

See you all next week.

NOTE to all players – please arrive by 9.45am, ready to start promptly at 10am.

No.1 Winter Bowls Tournament – Week 3 & 4

Week 3 & 4 (25th May and 1st June ’24) – Week 3: My apologies for not putting a report onto the website). We had a very eerie start to the day, with a fog hovering over the green while we played the first game of the day.  After a quick break to enjoy a yummy morning tea, all players were back out onto the rink for the second game of the day.  Today’s winners were,

Frank Ryan – 27 shots and joint runner up, Rosie Grace and Heather Redpath with 23 shots.

Week 4 – Last day of the tournament and the weather experts said there would be light showers early in the morning and heavy showers later in the evening.  Sadly, they were mistaken as we had some light showers during the first game of the day.  Luckily, we made it through, and only needed to come off the green for around 10 minutes.  Our players were very keen to play on and complete the tournament.

With the second game finished our players came in for some homemade sausage rolls, YUMMO!! and waited for the final results of the day.

Today’s winners were Cheryl Plunkett (24 shots) and runner-up Sally King and Vonny Ryan (23 shots). Thank you to our substitutes for the day, Rosie Grace and Colin Shiel.

TOP 4 FINAL PLACINGS – 1st 93 shots – Heather Redpath,     2nd 80 shots – Tom Martin,            3rd 79 shots – Frank Ryan , 4th 75 shots – Robert Rook

Players finished their ten ends by 11.15 and were inside for a quick cuppa and a spot of morning tea (thankyou Jennifer).

Well here we are again, for another season of Edithvale BC Winter Bowls Tournament.  We had 20 eager members sign up to play with a handful of members happy to fill in as an emergency.  With the draw done and all players advised by email (except two) the Conditions of Play, we began round 1 on Saturday 11th May. Welcome new members to EBC, Tom Martin (trf from Carrum), Chris Janssen (trf from Sandringham) and welcome back to Roger Williams (trf from Mordialloc).  They joined in with our seasoned players who have played many times over years in this tournament.

Once again I was fixated on the weather report each night as well as the 7 day forecast for Edithvale on my weather app and they all agreed that the day would be cloudy and           NO RAIN. Yahoo!!

All players arrived on time and were out on the green by 10am ready for game 1.  A few players said it was challenging with shifting winds, but they were all happy to be out playing bowls.  Players finished their first game and were inside for a quick cuppa and some yummy morning tea (thankyou Vonnie and Diane).

Back out again for the second game and the weather fined up and got a little warm for some with coats and beanies discarded.  It was great to see some of our members coming along to watch and catch up with friends.  The second game finished and with all score cards handed in, Frank and Diane added scores and worked out the winners for the day.

Todays winners were Heather Redpath – 26 shots and Claire Baskett – 24 shots. Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 3 – Rd. 4 Sat. 19th Aug. ’23.

Today’s game was the last day for our third Winter Tournament in 2023, and what a thrilling finish for the top four spots.  With a couple of last minute substitutes for the day, there was a couple of adjustments made to the score cards.  When Mr Turnbull arrived, 2 minutes before start time, score cards were handed out and game number 7 commenced.  The weather was once again favourable with NW winds and the occasional misty rain, which was more of a nuisance than a worry.  Today saw some close scores and drawn games.  Inside for a cuppa and a biscuit, then back outside for the final game of the tournament.

Game number eight began with no rain and only a slight breeze, which helped drawing bowls into the head.  There was a few tense moments on one of the rinks, with last weeks joint ladder leaders playing against each other.

After the game was over all helped pack up and venture inside for the end of tournament Sausage Rolls (thank you Diane).

Todays results were –

Joint Runners-up with 24 shots, were Claire Baskett and Brendan Doyle.

Winner with 27 shots, was Jennifer Ellis.

Thanks to our substitutes for today, the ever reliable ‘Brendan Doyle’ and Anne Kuuse and thanks to all that helped pack up outside and inside. Also thanks to Pamela for putting my report and photos of winners onto the website.
