Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 3 – Rd. 4 Sat. 19th Aug. ’23.

Today’s game was the last day for our third Winter Tournament in 2023, and what a thrilling finish for the top four spots.  With a couple of last minute substitutes for the day, there was a couple of adjustments made to the score cards.  When Mr Turnbull arrived, 2 minutes before start time, score cards were handed out and game number 7 commenced.  The weather was once again favourable with NW winds and the occasional misty rain, which was more of a nuisance than a worry.  Today saw some close scores and drawn games.  Inside for a cuppa and a biscuit, then back outside for the final game of the tournament.

Game number eight began with no rain and only a slight breeze, which helped drawing bowls into the head.  There was a few tense moments on one of the rinks, with last weeks joint ladder leaders playing against each other.

After the game was over all helped pack up and venture inside for the end of tournament Sausage Rolls (thank you Diane).

Todays results were –

Joint Runners-up with 24 shots, were Claire Baskett and Brendan Doyle.

Winner with 27 shots, was Jennifer Ellis.

Thanks to our substitutes for today, the ever reliable ‘Brendan Doyle’ and Anne Kuuse and thanks to all that helped pack up outside and inside. Also thanks to Pamela for putting my report and photos of winners onto the website.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS:        1st – Heather Redpath (88 shots)

                                                  2nd – Diane Cameron (83 shots)

                                                  3rd – Frank Ryan (79 shots)

                                                  4th – Bernie Turnbull (78 shots)

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 3 – Rd. 3 Sat. 12th Aug. ’23.

Another great day for bowling with no rain and only a slight north/west breeze.  Although there was rain predicted for the morning, there was a couple of drops midway through the second game, but not enough to worry our tournament players.

Some were pretty quick finishing their first game and some took a little bit longer.  No matter there was plenty of morning tea for all.  Thanks to Jennifer for making the passionfruit slice.  Double Delish!!  Cards for the second game were handed out and back out we went to play   Great bowling today by some and there were some big scores.

Todays results were –

Runner-up with 27 shots, was Bernie Turnbull

Winner with 28 shots, was a very excited Diane Cameron (first time winner ever in this tournament).

Thanks to our substitute for today, Brendan Doyle and thanks to all that helped pack up outside and inside.  This makes the tournament organises job a lot easier.  It was great to see a few more members come along to watch. DIANE, FRANK, VONNIE (Match)

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 3 – Rd. 2 Sat. 5th Aug. ’23.

Before today’s game got underway, there was a mad scramble to organise a replacement for one of our tournament players, who was having car trouble.  I started at the beginning of the alphabet, on my phone contact list and got a bit worried when I reached the letter ‘R’, finally Roger Selwood came to the rescue and said he would be there asap.  We had some morning drizzle before the game started, but all that went away and the sun began to shine, every now and then.  The good thing was the wind had subsided and today’s game was an enjoyable one.

After the first game we all went inside for a cuppa and some morning tea, which was provided by Vonnie.  Delish!!  Cards for the second game were handed out and back out we went to play in brilliant sunshine.  Some pretty close games today but there were two distinct winners for today.

Todays results were –

Runner-up with 27 shots, was Heather Redpath

Winner with 28 shots, was Kingsley Ellis.

Thanks to our two substitutes for today, Brendan Doyle and Roger “The Rescuer” Selwood and thanks to all that helped pack up outside and inside.  This makes the tournament organises job a lot easier.  It was great to see some members come along to watch. DIANE, FRANK, VONNIE. (Match)

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 3 – Rd. 1 Sat. 29 Jul ’23.

The Club’s third and final Winter Tournament for 2023 started today and we had 20 eager members ready to play before 10am. The weather gods once again were on our side with some brilliant sunshine beaming down, although the north west winds were a real challenge. Our first game finished around 11.20am and we all ventured inside for a quick cuppa and a delightful morning tea of scones with jam and cream, provided by Marg Rook (thanks to Rob Rook for whipping the cream).

Cards for the second game were handed out, and back out onto the green we went. The weather got even warmer, so playing today was very enjoyable.  After the game our players packed up then came inside and awaited for the scores to be collated by Frank and Diane.

Todays results were –

Runner-up with 25 shots, was Peter Pawsey and winner with 26 shots was Vonnie Ryan.

Thanks to our two substitutes for today, Jim Kavanagh and Brendan Doyle and thanks to all that helped pack up outside and inside.  This makes the tournament organises job a lot easier.  It was great to see Irene Trupke come along today to watch and she enjoyed catching up with her friends at the Club.

Our 20 players for the day arrived with a spring in their step and all rugged up ready to play game 7 & 8, to complete our second Winter Bowls Tournament.  The first game of the day started at 10am and some found the strong breezes a real challenge. A couple of rinks played their last end with a sprinkling of rain before the heavens opened up and they quickly picked up their bags to put under cover. Inside for a quick cuppa and a delightful morning tea provided by Marg Rook and Pamela Bryant (thankyou ladies).  Finally the rain clouds moved on, the sun came out and it was time to head out for the second game of the day.  There were some pretty close scores in the first game which had some players ready to challenge for the lead heading into the last game.

The second game got underway and although there was no rain the winds were gusty and it was still a little chilly outside.  After the game our players packed up then came inside for some  tasty sausage rolls (thanks Diane) while Frank and Diane collated the days scores and worked out the final results for the tournament.  Before the prizemoney was given out our ‘End of Tournament ‘ raffle was drawn.  Many thanks to our sponsors for their generous donations – Chelsea Meats (Meat trays), Aspendale Gardens Fruit and Veg (Vegie Box) and Port Phillip Hoticulture (Plants).  Our winners will enjoy their prizes very much.

Well done to all players and thanks to our substitutes for the day, Pamela Bryant and Rob Rook. Many thanks to all that helped packed up at the end of the day. Our third and final tournament for 2023 starts Saturday 22nd July, there are 3 places left. Don’t forget “Scroungers” is back next Sat., there are just 6 places left.

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 2 – Rd. 3. – Sat. 1st Jul ’23.

After arriving at the Club early to set up for today, there were clear skies and a strong breeze, with the task of putting up the flags rather challenging.  We could see on the weather map that there was rain coming, but how much rain we couldn’t be sure.  There was no need to cancel the day’s play, only a slight delay, to allow for the sun shower to stop.

All players ventured outside for the first game of the day and scores on most rinks were pretty close.  There was a slight delay during the game with a brief shower, then all of a sudden out came the sun. After the first game we all ventured inside for a cuppa and morning tea.  Some even ventured over to the heater to warm up.

The second game got underway and although no rain it was still a little chilly outside.  Some great bowling today and scores were close again on some rinks.  Scores were collated and results for today are – Runner-up with 24 shots was Barb Sharp and today’s winner with 25 shots was Peter Pawsey.  Well done to all players

Thanks to our substitute for the day, Pamela Bryant and many thanks to Jennifer Ellis for the yummy morning tea.  Thanks also to Cheryl Plunkett for bringing along so me sweet treats and blowing bubbles to celebrate Bernie Turnbull’s birthday. Many thanks to all that helped pack up at the end of the day.

A big shout out to Kaye Cramond and Rob Rook, hope you both get better soon.  The next tournament starts 22nd July, sign up sheet is now up and filling fast. Take care everyone and see you all next week.

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 2 – Rd. 2. – Sat. 24th Jun ’23.

Another great day of bowling with plenty of drama, comedy, suspense, strong NorthWest winds……. and some pretty awesome bowling.  We had four substitutes playing today with one of our members filling in an hour before play.  So there was some extra work to be done to the scorecards this morning.  All players had arrived before 10am and out we went to bowl our first game of the day.  Some pretty close games with two rinks having a drawn game.

Back inside for a quick cuppa and some Honey Joys for morning tea. The score cards were handed out and then back outside for the second game.  It was good to see some of our members call in and watch some of the days play.  No sooner had we started our second game, that we heard those magic words “UP and BACK”, and we were back inside awaiting the final results of the day.  The second game saw a couple more drawn games , but there were two worthy winners for the day, joint winners on 35 shots for the day was Heather Redpath and Vonnie Ryan. Well done ladies.

Thanks to our substitutes for the day, John Lyons, John Bryant, Suzanne Webber and Peter Brain, great effort.

Many thanks to all that helped packed up at the end of the day.  Thanks also to Pamela Bryant for putting the report and photos onto the website. Take care everyone and see you all next week.  (The mystery bowler No. 12 was John Bryant.) DIANE, FRANK, VONNIE.  (Match)

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 2 – Rd. 1. – Sat. 17th Jun ’23.

Tournament number two started today with 24 members ready to bowl.  The weather gods were once again on our side with not one drop of rain to be seen, only brilliant sunshine …………… BUT the winds were blustery and cold. Brrr!

First game of the day saw some strange bowls going down the green with either not enough grass taken or a little too much,  Many times I heard someone shout out “Watch your Head”.  The first game was over in a flash and we were back inside for a warm drink and some home made biscuits (thanks Jennifer).

Back outside for the second game and the winds didn’t ease up.  It didn’t seem to matter where on the rink you played, there was no protection from those NNW winds.  We were all glad to get back inside, out of the wind.

With all score cards in, Frank and Diane collated the scores and today’s winners were :-

RUNNER-UP with 27 shots – Peter Pawsey and WINNER of the day, with 32 shots – Jennifer Ellis.

Many thanks to all that helped packed up at the end of the day.  Take care everyone and see you all next week.

Tournament organisers – DIANE, FRANK, VONNIE. (Match)

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 1. Rd. 4. Sat. 3rd Jun 2023

Round 4 of Tournament No.1 was played today and the day started with overcast skies and drizzle.  Out came the mobile phones with many checking the rain radar for Edithvale and predicted rain to come.  “Fear Not”, I said, “We will play today, and the rain will stay away”. Was I right, or was I right.  No rain and no wind either.  Cards were handed out and we went out onto ‘B’ green to play Game number 7 of the tournament.  We had only just started, and suddenly, we were back inside for a quick cuppa and a morning tea of mini lamingtons and Anzac biscuits…. delish.

Back outside for game number 8 and the weather started to warm up, with many coats and jackets being removed.  Some huge scores today and some very tight games.  Well done to all players for participating in this tournament.

Runner-up today with 28 shots was Garry Dodge and winner with 29 shots was Jan Collins.  Thanks to Brendan Doyle and Rosie Grace for filling in today. And thanks to Jan and Sally for the morning tea.  Thanks also to Diane for the sausage rolls at the end of the day.

Thanks also to our sponsors for the tournament and the raffle prizes.  Port Phillip Horticulture (Michael Cameron) and Barb Sharp for tournament prizemoney and to Chelsea Meats (Meat Tray), Aspendale Gardens Fruit & Veg (Vegie Box) for major prizes in the raffle.  Barb Sharp won the meat tray and Kaye Cramond won the vegie box.

TOURNAMENT WINNERS: –

1st Jan Collins – 113 points, 2nd Heather Redpath – 89 points, 3rd Garry Dodge – 85 points, 4thFrank Ryan – 84 points.

Thanks to Diane Cameron, Frank Ryan and Vonnie Ryan on behalf of Match and Bowling Comm. for making this event a “smashing” success!

Thanks Diane Cameron for your Tournament reports.

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 1. Rd. 3. Sat.  27th May 2023

Week 3 of Tournament No.1 was played today and what a day it was with brilliant blue skies and the sun was shining.  We had some pesky Galah’s picking at ‘A’ green and having some fun on the wires on the shade shelters.  We quickly shooed them away, so they would stop making a mess of our greens.

Players were treated to a morning tea of Oat Cookies and Honey Joy’s…. Yum Yum.  With all players present by 9.55am, cards were handed out and we all ventured out onto ‘B’ green to start the first game of the day.

Scores were close across all rinks, with some taking 4-5 ends to get used to playing East/West.  This makes it hard to accumulate a huge score, when only playing 10 ends each game.  Back inside after the first game for a quick bite to eat and a hot cuppa, before heading back outside for our second game of the day.

The weather got even warmer with many jackets coming off, and the breeze picked up as well, making it hard when playing against the wind to try and draw a shot.  Once again, some great bowls were played and there were some tight heads.  Score cards were handed in, then Frank and Diane collated all the scores to process and work out the winners for the day.

Today’s winner with 28-shots was Heather Redpath and runner-up was Bernie Turnbull with 22 shots.  Thanks again to Brendan Doyle for filling in today, and it was good to see some members come along to watch. Well done to all players and see you all next week.

Next week is the last day of the first tournament.  A sign-up sheet is now on the noticeboard for the next tournament that starts on Saturday 17th June.

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 1. Rd 2. – Sat 20th May ’23

Round 2 of Tournament No.1 for 2023 started under very cloudy skies with rain falling on and off since seven o’clock in the morning.  I did receive calls and text messages asking whether the game would go ahead and with ‘Confidence’ I said, YES, the first game would start around 10.15am, as there was a break in the rain band, according to the BOM radar.  Little did I realise that not only would the rain stop, but the sun would come out to shine.  Rain jackets came off, sun hats appeared, and we all enjoyed our two games of bowls.

There were a couple of late arrivals, but no matter, both games were played and finished before 1pm.  Many thanks to our two substitutes for the day, Suzanne Webber and Brendan Doyle filling in for a couple of players on the injured/sick list.  Also welcome back to Kaye Cramond, who has replaced Rob Rook.

Today’s winner with 32-shots was Jan Collins and runner-up was Brendan Doyle with 25 shots.  Well done to all players and see you all next week.

Best wishes to Helen Robinson who goes in for knee surgery this week and a speedy recovery to Rob Rook.

Diane Cameron (with a new hair cut)– Tournament Editor.

Winter Bowls Tournament – No. 1. Rd. 1. Sat. 13th May 2023

Tournament No.1 for 2023 started today under very different conditions compared to last year, when the weather was cold and wet.  Today when arriving at the Club, there was a thick fog and a chill in the air.  The rinks were all set up by Frank and morning tea was organised by Vonnie.  Cards and rinks were ready to go, all we needed was our registered players to arrive by 9.45am.  Well done to all for arriving on time.

Cards were given out and we all assembled on ‘B’ green for the first game.  The rink had some morning dew still on the green, but half-way through the first game the green dried up and the sun started to shine.  By 11.20 most of the players had finished their first game and went inside for a quick cuppa and a bite to eat.

Back outside for the second game which was played in brilliant sunshine, with many players discarding their beanies and putting on sunscreen and sun hats.  The breeze picked up towards the end of the game, which proved a bit tricky on the far end of the green.

Well done to all players and many thanks to our Substitutes for the day – Helen Robinson, Anne Kuuse and Rob Rook.

Today’s winner with 32-shots was Frank Ryan, and runner-up was Jan Collins with 31 shots.  Well done to all players and see you all next week.
